Curettage and Electrodesiccation

Curettage and Electrodesiccation (ED&C) is a basic skin procedure performed in the treatment of basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma.  The technique uses a sharp curette and is followed by electrodesiccation.  This treatment can also be used for small benign skin lesions and tumors. The cure rate using this technique is not as great as using excision process for skin cancers. ED&C is most effective on new skin cancers.  The cure rate is less successful for recurrent skin cancers when scar tissue has developed.
